Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Letters!
We talked about the alphabet in art and watched a fun video animating the famous alphabet story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We created some indian corn using pointillism (creating a painting using just dots) but instead of using a paint brush, we used our fingers to create the corn kernels!

Entertaining Our Favorite School Community Helpers
Entertaining Favorite Ladies II
Kindergarten was focusing on Community Helpers this week as their theme. So, we learned about some of our school community helpers that I interviewed with a video camera earlier this week. Then, we looked at the painting, "Entertaining Favorite Ladies II" by Jeanne Leighton-Lundberg Clarke. This painting is hanging in the Springville Museum of Art (I saw it in person two days ago!) In this painting, different women from painting history are depicted, and the artist is having them over for a feast. So, each student drew, on butcher paper that included plates for our feast, pictures of things that our school community helpers, namely our custodians, lunchroom workers, office secretaries, and principal do to to help our school.
Chicka Chicka BOOM BOOM!
9/14 - We watched a fun video putting the words of the famous alphabet book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to music and then talked about how alphabet letters don't really talk or do the silly things they do in the book. (personification!) We then created alphabet letters doing other things starting with the letter. For example, a Z zipping a zipper, or an S swimming in a sea! Click on the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom image to watch the fun version of the beloved book.
Calligrams
For our second time in art, we learned how to make art using letters in the alphabet! We looked at examples of calligrams, both using arabic (where calligrams started) and using letters that we recognize. We also watched calligrams be made on a fun website called Bembo's Zoo. I would encourage you to check it out at home as well! Just click on the picture below and it will take you to the website. Kindergarteners then had the opportunity to make their own animals out of letters. They turned out so neat.
