Earth Day WeavingsIn honor of earth day, we created weavings using green and blue construction paper and then drew different pictures about the earth with oil pastels to go around the earth weavings. To inspire us, we watched a Planet Earth youtube clip that showed a variety of scenes from our amazing planet.

Simple Machine Silhouettes
Part of the third grade curriculum is learning about simple machines. We looked at Rube Goldberg machines in art, and discussed how those machines are usually made up of lots of simple machines. We then watched the OK Go music video "This Too Shall Pass" and pointed out the many simple machines that they used to make their Rube Goldberg machine work. Each student then designed their own Rube Goldberg machine and drew it inside of their silhouette, replacing brain activity with their simple machines!

HabitatsWe did a big project in art about habitats to go along with the 3rd grade curriculum. First, each student created a large ripped paper collage of a habitat of their choice. Then, we created animals using pinch pots as the body to go in their habitat. They turned out really neat!

Stained Glass Christmas Trees
The 3rd graders learned about stained glass windows, as well as positive and negative space by creating these beautiful christmas tree stained glass windows with black construction paper and tissue paper.
|
TessellationsTo go along with their study of geometric shapes, we created tessellations in art. After each student traced their shape that they created, they colored them using at least one pair of complementary colors.

Pumpkin Lanterns
The 3rd graders made globe pumpkin lanterns for Halloween in art. They also learned about how globes spin on an axis, just like our earth! They turned out really neat.
Chrysanthemum Illustrations
The 3rd graders are learning about how stories have a beginning, middle and end. We talked about illustrations and each student created a tempera painting of the beginning, middle or end to tell the story of Chrysanthemum, which they had previously read in class.
Spelling Word Calligrams
Welcome to the start of a new school year! The 3rd graders have started off their year in art creating calligrams from their spelling words. A calligram is a picture created with letters. Learn more about calligrams here! Each student must choose at least one word from their spelling list, and then create a calligram using that word and others if they choose. They are turning out great!
Personal Narrative Movies
The third graders are learning about personal narratives, so after writing a personal narrative about an embarrassing moment, they are going to create an artistic movie using stop-action filming. We learned about the father of movie art, Nam June Paik, and watched a video clip about his work. Click on the picture to the left to watch the video and find out more about this famous artist!
Upcycled Robot ExhibitThird grade finished their upcycled robots, which we displayed in the library so that the whole school could enjoy them. They did an excellent job designing and creating their unique robots!

Symbols of American FreedomWe created a collaborative art project using symbols of American freedom in honor of President's Day. We first looked at artworks by Jasper Johns and Danh Vo and then talked about various symbols of American freedom. Each student created 2-3 rectangles with at least 3 symbols, that all went together to make an American Flag.

Upcycling Robots
We learned about upcycling in art and are using those ideas to create robots. Each student is including a simple machine in their robot, and these robots are going to be displayed in the library when we are all finished. The students have been so excited about this project and have brought in so many different recyclable materials. Thank you!

Cherry Blossom PaintingsWe are going to have a school art show on February 6-7 (during parent teacher conferences) and the theme is Chinese New Year. So, the third graders have been working on some cherry blossom paintings. We talked about composition and what makes a good one. The students then had to take a picture of some cherry blossom trees and create their own good composition from it with tempera paint. We also have been talking about how the world is made of millions of colors, not just colors straight from the bottle.

Winter Landscapes
We learned about landscapes this week and created them using watercolors and a special technique called wax resist. The students looked at famous landscapes and we talked about the foreground, middle ground and background in landscapes. We also discovered techniques that the landscape artists use to create the illusion that certain parts of the landscape are closer or farther apart, namely by overlapping, using atmospheric perspective, size and placement.
The students used white crayons to draw different aspects of their landscapes and then painted over their drawings using washes of watercolor. We will finish our paintings next week!

Stained Glass Windows
We created stained glass window Christmas trees in art this week. Mrs. Chadwick's class was asked to decorate the windows of Captain Lens BBQ with art for Christmas time, so they used these stained glass trees! We used construction and tissue paper to create them, and learned about the art and process behind real stained glass window-making. Here is a picture of Captain Len's window decorations!
Tessellations
3rd grade has learning about multiplication in class, so we started on a tessellation project in art. A tessellation is a repeating 2D geometric shape that allows for no overlaps or gaps in its repetition. Here is a cool website with instructions and information about tessellations! Some typical examples are a bee's honeycomb, or snake skin. Each student created their own tessellation design, and then traced it as many times as they could to create a repeating pattern.
We then talked about using colors to describe, and meanings behind certain colors. Like blue being cold or sad, or red as passionate. Students had to color their tessellations as "self portraits" using colors that described them.

Storyboarding
The third graders have been learning how to tell a story in class as well as about Native Americans. Each student chose a name for him or herself (for example She Who Likes to Paint). In art, we learned about storyboards, and the students created a storyboard using their Native American name as the title.
Hello from BYU!
Mrs. Baer allowed us, three BYU students, to come teach one of her 3rd grade classes and we had the privilege of teaching them about blind contour line drawings. they all got really into drawing each other while practicing to only use one line and not pick up their pencils. we had a lot of laughs. then we had them choose their favorite blind contour drawing and turn it into a Halloween monster, needless to say things got really silly. the students did such a good job creatively turning their peers into crazy creatures.
Blind Contour Monsters
In 3rd grade art we have been learning to see with our eyes! Using blind contour (drawing the outlines, never picking up the pencil or looking at the paper), students practiced drawing each other and really looking at the shapes of their partner's face. After getting the hang of blind contours, students then created a Halloween monster using some of the lines from their partner portraits. It was a lot of fun to see how the drawings of people morphed into monsters!
Columbus Day + The Big Fitz = Art Fun
In honor of Columbus Day and in conjunction with reading about the Big Fitz, third graders created origami paper boats. We talked about the origins of origami, as well as the shapes involved as we folded, and then the classroom teachers discussed the different parts of a boat using the paper boats. Here is a link to a website with the instructions. They actually can float!
Illustrations
3rd grade has been working on illustrations as inspired by the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. In Language Arts, they have been focusing on identifying the beginning, middle and end of the story, so we read Chrysanthemum, and then each table was assigned a different part of the story to illustrate. Doing collage as the illustration medium has been challenging, but also rewarding for the students.
The Color Wheel!
Week of 9/17 - This week we learned about the color wheel. We talked about Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary colors, and the learned how to mix those colors with tempera paint. Students had fun trying to mix "the perfect orange" or even a middle gray using the complementary colors.
Comics about Heroes
Week of 9/10- Third grade is learning about different types of writing, so we discussed narratives in art. We talked about different types of art that could be narrative: illustrations, paintings, graphic novels, comics... We then talked about heroes, and how there are superheroes in comics, but also real-life heroes like members of our family, firefighters, police officers, the armed forces, doctors, etc. Students then created comics that told a story about their hero.
Calligrams
For our second time in art, we learned how to make art using letters in the alphabet! We looked at examples of calligrams, both using arabic (where calligrams started) and using letters from the alphabet that we recognize. We also watched calligrams be made on a fun website called Bembo's Zoo. I would encourage you to check it out at home as well! Just click on the picture below and it will take you to the website. Students then had the opportunity to make their own animals out of letters. The third graders tried to create the animals out of the letters that they were spelled with. Some students were able to make a whole zoo of animals!
