Urban, Suburban and Rural Collages
The 2nd graders have been learning about Urban, Suburban and Rural places, especially what you would find in each location. So, each student created a collage that showed one of the three locations using details that we talked about in class. Can you guess what each collage represents?

Perspective BunniesWe learned about creating perspective today and bunnies as our subject in honor of spring. Students created a close and far away bunny, as well as a background using oil pastels.

Dr. Seuss Creatures
In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, the 2nd graders created creatures inspired by Dr. Seuss' imaginative illustrations from his wonderful picture books.
Abstract Body Art

The second graders have been learning about their bodies in class. In art we talked about using our bodies as tools to make our art, as well as abstract art. The students got in groups and traced each other's bodies on large pieces of paper and then painted in all of the shapes that their tracings made!

Alpine Starry Night
The second graders studied Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night, and created their own versions inspired by Alpine at night. We painted the night sky with tempera paint, and then drew the landscape using oil pastels.
Christmas Traditions: Caroling Portraits
The second graders were talking about traditions in class. So, we talked about various traditions that happen throughout the year, as well as during the holiday season. One long standing tradition in Caroling, which we do as a school on the last day of school before the winter break. So, the students drew themselves as carolers and then painted them using tempera cakes.
Symmetrical Snowflakes
We learned about symmetry in art and talked about both regular and radial symmetry. After folding their paper to make six sided snowflakes, students cut out shapes to create their radially symmetrical snowflakes.
5 Finger Story Turkeys
We reviewed transition words in art, and created hand turkeys to go along with the 5 finger story.
Pumpkin Expressions

Part of 2nd grade curriculum is telling a story using different characters and voices. So, in art we created pumpkins that had various expressions that told a story! Each student made at least 2 pumpkins and a background, and then we shared our stories in class.

Columbus Day Watercolor Paintings
On October 14 we commemorate when Columbus landed in the Americas. Students learned a little bit about Columbus, as well as watercolor techniques and origami to create these beautiful mixed media paintings
Animal Calligrams
Welcome to the start of a new school year! The 2nd graders have started off art brushing up on their letters and imagination with calligrams. Students created animals using the letters that spelled that animals name. You can see some cool inspirations by going to the website Bembo's Zoo.
Habitat MuralsThe Second graders are learning a lot about habitats, so we discussed different habitats in art, and then broke into groups to create various habitat murals. The first week, each ground painted their habitat with tempera paints. The second week, the students drew and cut out animals for their habitat. They turned out really colorful and neat!

Finished Piggy Banks!

Positive and Negative ShapeWe learned about positive and negative shape in art, and used the iconic clover for St. Patrick's day to make our own positive and negative shapes. Students first learned how to draw a clover, and then used different colored papers to show their understanding this important art concept.

Piggy Banks
2nd grade has been learning about money and budgeting...so naturally we made piggy banks in art. Each student created two pinch pots that they put together for the body, and then added details with their extra clay and toothpicks.
Symbols of Liberty
Second grade was learning about American symbols, so we talked about various symbols and focused on the Liberty Bell in art. Students learned about the history of the Liberty Bell and studied what it looked like. We got to paint with special sparkle watercolors so that the bell would look metallic!
Urban, Suburban, and Rural CollagesThe 2nd graders reviewed the three types of areas in art by making a big list about what an urban, suburban or rural place would look like, and then choosing one of those places to create using paper. They are now on display near the 2nd grade hall!

Abstract Art Using Our Bodies
2nd grade is learning about bodies this month! In art, we are talking about how we can using our bodies to make art, and looked at what abstract art is. Each table group then created a large artwork by tracing one another's bodies in different poses and angles across the page. After tracing each person, the table group used tempera paint to fill in the shapes that the lines tracing their bodies made. It was amazing to see what the students came up with and how the different groups worked together to make their collaborative projects!
Chinese Lanterns
We are having a school art show on February 6-7 (during parent teacher conferences) with a Chinese New Year theme because the Chinese New Year is February 10th this year! Each grade is creating Chinese-themed art, and the second graders made Chinese Lanterns. We first talked about different symbols in the Chinese culture, as well as the different animals for each year. Then each student decorated a paper with these symbols and other fitting designs. We then cut and created their papers into lanterns!

Proportions and ResolutionsThe second graders learned about the proportions of our bodies in art. We practiced drawing bodies in proportion and then created a self portrait. They were discussing resolutions in class, so we illustrated our New Year's Resolutions around our self portraits.

Christmas Lights
As a review of lines, learning about traditions, and also as a project for the spirit of the season, we created Christmas lights using different lines, and chalk pastel to make them glow. We started off class talking about different lines that can be made in art both looking at different art works as well as seeing how many lines we could create in 3 minutes. We also talked about what traditions are, and the different traditions that cultures and families have during this time of year, Christmas lights being one popular tradition.
We then created a moving line across our page and lights to fill the strand. The students used chalk pastels to fill in the lights, giving them a glowing effect when smudged.

Drawing Crowds
2nd grade is going to start learning about urban, suburban, and rural areas soon. So, as a pre-teaching activity, we learned about these different places, and the amount of people that would be in each setting. We then looked at pictures of crowds, as well as artwork by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and contemporary artist, Guilherme Kramer and talked about the various techniques that artists use to show a crowd. Each student then drew their own crowd in a setting of their choice. We had quite the variety: football players, parachuters, birthday parties, Santa Claus and elves, etc.
Petroglyphs
2nd grade is learning a little bit about Native Americans this week, so we did an art project inspired by the petroglyphs that were created by Native Americans long ago. There are a lot of petroglyphs down in St. George and Moab...so pretty close by! We learned about petroglyphs, especially about how the Native Americans told stories through their drawings, and then we brainstormed what stories we would tell about ourselves through pictures. Each student drew 3-4 things about themselves on a white paper using white crayon, and then painted over the drawings with brown watercolor. It was like a magic picture coming to life!

Harvest Still Life2nd grade learned about drawing a still life in art. They were learning about different plants in class, so we talked about the different plants that grew in the fall, and also discussed a brief history of still life. They did a wonderful job trying to capture the colors and shapes of their objects with oil pastels!

Picasso Witches
To get ready for Halloween next week, we created Picasso-inspired witches in 2nd grade art. Students learned about how Picasso painted people from multiple views at the same time, and then created paper witches using 2 different views of a face. They turned out awesome!

Old and New Pop ArtWeek of 10/15 - 2st grade was learning about things that are old and things that are new in their classes, so we looked at various artworks and talked about ways that we could tell that the artist wanted it to look old or new. We then looked at Andy Warhol's screen prints of Queen Elizabeth II and Marilyn Monroe, talked about how he made them, and how some of them look older and newer. Then students got to create pop art using their faces and try to make three older and three newer-looking with their various color and style choices.

Leaf Rubbings
In the spirit of learning about the changing seasons, second graders created leaf rubbings in art class the week before fall break. We learned about the color wheel, especially focusing on warm and cool colors, and did some activities to reinforce those concepts. Each student created one paper of leaf rubbings with warm colors, and one with cool colors.

Second grade finished their illustrations as inspired by Slowly, Slowly said the Sloth by Eric Carle. They are turned out great!

Eric Carle Illustrations
Week of 9/17- The second graders started learning about illustrators this week! We focused on the illustrator Eric Carle, but also talked about illustrators such as Dr. Suess, Walter Wick, Jeanette Canyon, and Beatrix Potter. In art class, teachers read the book "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly said the Sloth" by Eric Carle and then students began to create collage illustrations based on the last sentence in the book: "I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly." So far they are looking great!
Comics about Heroes
Week of 9/10- For Language Arts in second grade, students are learning about the different elements of a story. So in art, we talked about different types of art that could be narrative: illustrations, paintings, graphic novels, comics... We then talked about heroes, and how there are superheroes in comics, but also real-life heroes like members of our family, firefighters, police officers, the armed forces, doctors, etc. Students then created comics that told a story about their hero.
Calligrams
For our second time in art, we learned how to make art using letters in the alphabet! We looked at examples of calligrams, both using arabic (where calligrams started) and using letters from the alphabet that we recognize. We also watched calligrams be made on a fun website called Bembo's Zoo. I would encourage you to check it out at home as well! Just click on the picture below and it will take you to the website. Students then had the opportunity to make their own animals out of letters. The second graders tried to create the animals out of the letters that they were spelled with. Some students were able to make a whole zoo of animals!
